Feeling Less Sexy? Maybe it's your Medications
Many times people think that they don't feel sexy because of "stress" in their everyday lives. Unfortunately, in our highly medication-treated culture, there are many prescribed and non-prescribed medications, which essentially functions as a silent stressor, because these medications treat one problem but actually generate another one. These may lower libido, and even sometimes cause sexual dysfunction. You may have a problem about your sexuality, but the problem isn't your sexual responsiveness or even psychology, but is a silent problem as a reaction to drugs.
Here is a list of common everyday medications which are known to create lower libido, and sometimes sexual dysfunction:
· Anti-hypertensive medications (e.g., Beta blockers, some diuretics)
· Antidepressant medications (e.g., Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc.)
· Antacids (e.g., cimetidine ("Tagamet"), ranitidine ("Zantac"), etc.)
· Antibiotics (some may cause irritation and discomfort during intercourse)
· Antihistamines (e.g., may cause decreased lubrication)
· Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., naproxen)
· Tranquilizers
· Anti-psychotic medications
· Anti-cholesterol medications (e.g., Gemfibrozil)
· Epileptic Medications (Dilantin)
Here is a list of common everyday nonprescribed drugs which may alter testosterone level, hormones, and sexual responsiveness:
· Alcohol
· Caffeine
· Nicotine
· Amphetamines
· Marijuana
· Heroin
· "Uppers"
· "Downers"
Some of these everyday drugs may momentarily relax us and therefore will seemingly make us feel more sexy, but in the long run, sex drive and our hormones go down with them.
If you have any questions about whether or not any medications and/or everyday "drugs" have some affect on your sexuality, whether we're talking about being in the mood, hormone levels, or bodily responsiveness, consult your medical health-care professional. Remember, information and awareness are your first steps toward handling any silent stressor. Treat yourself well and educate yourself. That alone may make you more relaxed.
